SWPL opt against friendly cup event

-

WITH the Football Association not allowing spectators into grounds in Steps 3 to 6 until May 17, plans for non-league tournaments in April have been shelved – much to the disappointment of leagues, managers and players alike.

After seasons at those steps were officially ended by football’s authorities last month, the South West Peninsula League was planning a cup tournament for those clubs who wanted to take part, which they were hoping would begin in April with a grand final at the end of May.

However, news from the FA last week that fans cannot set foot into grounds for another month meant the Peninsula League was forced to reconsider that as an option.

Phil Hiscox, the secretary of the Peninsula League, said: “The FA sent an email out on Wednesday afternoon saying that, having spoken to the DCMS (Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport) Steps 3 to 6 – the Southern League, Western League and Peninsula League level – fans would not be allowed to return until May 17 at the earliest.

“Without crowds, we decided it just wasn’t worth doing it. It wasn’t just the financing of it, it was the policing of it too – with volunteers etc.

“Some clubs have been quite philosophical and have taken the view that they now have some clarity and they can get seed in the ground – and keep the groundsmen happy.

“And if the Government lifts all restrictions at the end of June, there is no reason why we can’t have a full pre-season in July.”

One manager who said he is disappointed by the decision is Steven Orchard, manager of Premier East division Elmore.

He said: “Me and the players are absolutely gutted that the cup competitions have been cancelled. It was something to look forward to after several months of no football. Our last game was on October 28.

“We understand the decision that has been taken and we are grateful that the league tried to organise something.

“With no spectators allowed it is not financially viable to host games.”

Clubs will still be able to play friendlies – just without fans. Hiscox said: “I don’t see an awful lot of point because you would be playing friendlies for no great purpose.

“When you play friendlies in July the purpose is to be ready for the new season.”

Hiscox will now begin work on next season’s fixture lists for the two divisions – East and West. “I can work on next season at my leisure now,” he said. “I will be archiving this season and setting up next season.”
