Experience may stand Exeter in good stead

EXETER City’s play-off know-how will stand them in good stead as they enter the final ten games of the League Two season, according to top-scorer Matt Jay.

The Grecians have reached the play-offs in three of the last four seasons - losing in the final on all three occasions - and only missed out in 2019 on the final day of the campaign.

With City sitting eighth in the table - just one point behind the final play-off place and seventhplaced Newport County - another tilt at the play-offs is definitely on the cards for Matt Taylor’s men, with them still to face four of the top seven, including hosting the Exiles at St James Park.

And with Exeter’s previous campaigns showing they know what they have to do to ensure that they make the top seven, Jay, who made it 18 for the season in securing the 1-0 win over Salford City on Saturday, said that the experience the group has will help them.

“We are into the business end and hopefully we will be there for thereabouts,” Jay said. “We have been in this position before, and hope we can get there again.

“We have not done as well in the play-offs - and people say we maybe not should be in this league - but we are. The experience from the group and the staff and the players is going to stand us in good stead to make sure we get there this season.”

Next up for the Grecians is a trip to Port Vale on Good Friday, with Darrell Clarke’s men, who seemed to being dragged into a relegation battle, finding form at just the right time after three wins in a row that should ensure their safety with a nine-point cushion for the Valiants over the bottom two.

Jay added: “Port Vale will be a tough place to go but we have a couple of days this week to recover and be ready to go. We can only concentrate on one game at a time and we are putting ourselves in there with ten games to go.”
