Mayor keen to extend spell with Argyle

MIDFIELD playmaker Danny Mayor has revealed that he would be keen on extending his stay at Plymouth Argyle.

The talented 30-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season so would have the option to leave as a free agent.

However, Mayor has admitted that Pilgrims’ boss Ryan Lowe is the best manager he has ever played for.

He was at Bury when Lowe was in charge there before following him to Home Park in the summer of 2019.

Mayor said: “I have loved my two years here, I have loved working for the Gaffer.

“I think in the next couple of weeks we will probably know more about a few of us.”

Asked whether he would be open to the idea of staying at Argyle, Mayor replied: “Yeah, definitely.

“Like I say, I have loved my two years here. It’s such an ambitious club, I would love to be a part of it.”

Joe Edwards, the Pilgrims’ skipper for much of this season, is another player who is out of contract this summer, along with defender Will Aimson.

Lowe said: “In terms of speaking to the players, there is no real benchmark on when we will do it.

“I might go and speak to one or two today and just have a general chit-chat if I have got time. It might be next week.

“We will see how it pans over the next few weeks and then when the time is right I may speak to people who I need to speak to.”

Mayor also talked about the close relationship he has with Lowe and how he enjoyed his man management and style of play, among other things.

“He’s probably the best manager that I have ever worked with and I’m thoroughly enjoying it,” said Mayor.

“He’s a young manager, I think everyone in the Football League knows what he’s about. He’s top drawer.”

Mayor continued: “He’s never going to be a manager that is predictable.

“You could come off a game thinking you have done alright and he could still come for you.

“He knows what to say, I think that’s the biggest thing about him. His man-management is the best I have had.

“He knows when you need an arm around you. He knows when you need a rollicking.”

Mayor, so often the source of the Pilgrims’ best attacking play, has made a total of 43 starts this season but scored only twice, much to his own disappointment.

He said: “I just want some goals and assists, I will be honest with you.

“I know the team looks at me to maybe get them up the pitch and start play, which is great.

“It’s nice that the Gaffer knows I bring more than goals and assists.

“But, from a personal point of view - being a bit selfish, I wouldn’t mind a couple of goals. I think Joey (Joe Edwards) can spare some!”

Edwards is Argyle’s second top scorer with eight, behind 18-goal striker Luke Jephcott.
