Aimson set to miss rest of season

-

IT looks likely that Plymouth Argyle defender Will Aimson has seen his last action of the season, writes Chris Errington.

Aimson was ruled out of the 3-1 defeat by Oxford United at the Kassam Stadium on Saturday by an ankle injury.

Manager Ryan Lowe has said that the 27-year-old will definitely miss the visit of Sunderland to Home Park this weekend for their penultimate match of the campaign.

Aimson, who is out of contract this summer, is almost certain to miss the final fixture of 2020/21, away to Gillingham on Sunday, May 9.

He picked up the injury during the first half of the 6-0 home drubbing by Charlton Athletic last Tuesday.

Lowe said: “Will came off with his ankle and it has ballooned up. The likelihood of seeing him in the next two games is probably very slim.

“He may make the Gillingham game but he’s definitely going to miss Sunderland.”

With Argyle’s League One status for next season now secured, it would make little sense to take any risks with Aimson’s ankle for the last game of the season in Kent.

Liverpool loan signing Adam Lewis was also an absentee from the Pilgrims’ squad at Oxford due to an ankle injury.

Argyle were again without midfielder Conor Grant against Oxford because of a groin injury, which has sidelined him for the last four matches.

Then, in the closing minutes of the game at the Kassam Stadium, defender Sam Woods left the pitch with the recurrence of a hamstring problem.

Teenage defender Ollie Tomlinson could get his first taste of first team action before the season ends. The 18-year-old, has been an unused substitute on several occasions recently.

Lowe is reluctant to throw him in at the deep end, say for example against Sunderland striker Charlie Wyke, who has scored 30 goals in all competitions this season.

So the game against Gillingham, who are likely to have missed out on a play-off place by then, could be a better bet for Tomlinson to make his Pilgrims’ debut.

Lowe said: “I will have a look at that, maybe he might get some minutes. I have got to do it properly. I can’t just throw a young lad into a caged lion.”
