Grant expecting to hold talks with Argyle soon

-

CONOR Grant expects to have discussions over his future at Plymouth Argyle in the next couple of weeks.

The 26-year-old is about to complete his third - and best - season with the Pilgrims after joining them from Everton in 2018.

Grant is out of contract this summer and is ‘open’ to the idea of extending his stay at Home Park.

The midfielder is one of 16 players whose current deals will expire at the end of June.

When asked about his situation, Grant said: “I don’t know much to be honest.

“I’m sure there will be discussions over the next week or so and into the summer. At the minute there is not much to say.

“I’m open to the possibility, of course. I have really enjoyed my time here. We will just see what goes in the next couple of weeks.”

Grant experienced relegation from League One in his first season at Argyle but then a promotion the following campaign.

This season, on a personal level, he has had a good time and scored some spectacular goals but the Pilgrims’ form has fluctuated wildly.

Grant said: “I think that’s a football career. I don’t think you are ever just going to have plain sailing.

“Every season has its ups and down and its challenges. I have learned that through my career so far and it’s about navigating your way through.”

One of the many challenges of this Covid-19 impacted season has been the absence of the Green Army from games.

With the exception of three very limited capacity crowds in December, all of Argyle’s games at Home Park this term have been played behind closed doors.

Grant said: “That has been the big miss this season. It would have been a packed house (against Sunderland on Saturday). The fans have been missed for sure.

“It’s something that as the season has gone on you realised this is the situation so you just have to go out and perform to the best of your ability.

“You are so aware of what fans can bring so it’s a strange one.”

Grant has made a total of 39 starts and seven substitute appearances for the Pilgrims this season.

However, he was ruled out for four matches by a groin injury before returning to action in the 3-1 home defeat by Sunderland.

Grant said: “I was frustrated to miss the last three, three and a half weeks.

“I wanted to just continue the momentum of the season and it was nice to get back in the team and get another 90 minutes.”

He also came up with his 14th assist of the season, providing the cross from which skipper Joe Edwards headed home his ninth goal of the campaign to make the score 1-1.

Grant said: “I put it in quite a dangerous area at the back post and JoBo is there, as always, so credit to him.

“He has got the knack for a goal this season. It’s great when you have got them in the team.”
