Tonkin replaces Morgan at the Pirates
CORNISH Pirates have confirmed the appointment of Louie Tonkin as the club’s new assistant coach.
The 38-year-old Cornishman joins the club following the departure of Chris Morgan and joins after leaving his role as an Academy coach at Exeter Chiefs.
Speaking of his appointment. Pirates’ joint head coach, Alan Paver, said: “Having the pleasure of connecting with Louie over the past couple of years or so when he worked at Exeter Chiefs, a strong bond and rapport has been built and he is a good guy.
“Louie has always shown an interest in different environments, discussing tactics, and looking at technical aspects of the game. He also has a real passion for the development of players, so when he showed an interest to come on board, we took it seriously right away.
“We also thank the Chiefs for enabling the move to happen smoothly.”
Alan added: “His knowledge is fantastic, and he has integrated in very well, and although already experienced he still has a hunger to explore and learn.”
Louie’s family, based in West Wales, have a Welsh/Italian background, and his wife Hayley is South African. As for hobbies and interests, he much enjoys travel, playing the guitar, hiking with Hayley around the Cornish Coast – and Braais and Ale at home on weekends.
Although he was born in Cornwalal, Tonkin was raised in Wales and is a former lock forward who played for the likes of UWIC RFC, Swansea, Coventry, and Llandovery.
Tonkin has a degree in sports science from the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff. He has plenty of coaching experience having spent time with Scarlets’ Academy, Carmarthen Quins & Pontypool, where he was head coach, Cardiff University and he also had a stint as head of rugby with Bahrain rugby prior to joining Chiefs.
