HALLWORTHY

Kivells report on September 30 an entry of 350 cattle on the second really wet day of the week which will impact the lesser cattle pre-housing, but the best cattle still a stunning trade. Liz Richards stealing the trade with a powerful run of South Devon crosses, her best a black South Devon steer with a carcase and shape to £1375, second a pair of South Devon steers deep and well fleshed at 22m to £1335 and £1330, with 18m South Devon crosses to £1320. Next was Ant Hart of St Blazey with a 16m Simmental cross steer with power and depth to £1340, close behind a pure Simmental steer at the same age to £1335. J Vokes back in with a stunning pair of Limousin cross steers with great carcase and outlook to £1200. K Larson of Blisland next with a powerful pen of four 20m Limousin cross steers to £1175. Mr Stevens of Liskeard ran in next with a very smart pen of seven pure bred Shorthorn steers at 24m to £1145. M Biddick of St Wenn saw his best Charolais cross steer at 16m to £1100. The Chapman Family of Blackwater saw their front end of 29 cattle to £1095 for a pen of Limousin cross steers. Heifers were fewer in numbers again this week with Mr George Cowling of St Issey topping with an outstandin­g run of 16m Charolais crosses, 39 cattle topped out at £1070 and several bunches between £900 and £1000. F R Chapman next with a superb pair of Aberdeen Angus heifers to £1055 and a pen of six Limousin crosses to £1005. The younger cattle saw Ant Hart stealing the show with a super pair of purebred Sim Steers at 11m to £1130 and Mr Teague & Son of Coombe, St Austell seeing his 13m pure Hereford steers to £1000. A small dispersal of pedigree Hereford cows and calves from Miss N Sanders of St Neot saw her best four-year-old cow with bull calf to £1420. D Hobbs of Taphouse, Liskeard saw his Aberdeen Angus cross cow with Hereford heifer calf to £1190. Mr Champion of Liskeard with a run of pedigree Hereford cows to a top of £1240. An Aberdeen Angus bull aged 16m for Mr I Morgan reached £1450, and a Hereford bull at 17m for Mr Champion made £1310. Not quite so many about in the stirk pens, but a respectabl­e entry of 63-head which seemed to still sell to a premium. Top of the day was £650 for some 10m Hereford steers, with Simmentals of the same age to £640. Other younger steers to £590 for Herefords, with the best of the heifers to £620 for Simmentals, £510 and £500 for their Herefords (10m). Chris Roose back again with the best of his Herefords to £620 (10m), and a sweet Limousin heifer to £505 (9m). Good numbers still coming forward in the calf section, thank you to all vendors supporting the new section. Alan and Kevin Sanders of Minster back again with a wonderful consignmen­t of young sappy calves and were well rewarded by making £380 of their Blue bulls with others to £360, £358, £340 and £325, with the best of their heifers to £300 (1m), £295, £250 and £205 all around a month old. The best of his Herefords went on to make £225 and £220 for his bulls and the heifers to £210 and £170. A T Bayly of Warbstow had three smart calves in which topped out at £340 for a Limmy bull, £270 for another Limmy bull and his Lim heifer at the same money. Younger Blues sold to £228 for heifers in from Raymond Quinn and the Rail Family had their Blue bulls to £225. George Parsons had some older nearly weaned calves which were slightly harder to place and made £290, £260 and £245. In the sheep section, a similar entry of 227 draft ewes and another very fast trade. A lot more could have been sold. Top on the day was £125 from G & S Whiting of Fursdon Farm, Liskeard, followed by Tom Earl of Ethy Barton, St Winnow who realised £118 for his first pen. An entry of 283 fat lambs and the trade is getting stronger by the day. The overall average on the day was 242.8p, up around £10 to £12 ahead. The good meat lambs ranging from 250p to a top of 261p for a pen of Texel crosses 44kgs £115 from Kayleigh Dawe of Whitstone, followed by Jason Kestell of Launceston 259p for a pen 44kgs £114. Heavies very much in demand top call was £132 from H Cobbledick of Jacobstowe, followed by the Abel Bros of Tavistock for their three pens of heavies which made £117 and £114 twice. A smaller entry of 342 store lambs and a flying trade, the top being £97 from Godfrey & Owen Davey of Heath Park, Bratton Clovelly. There were 14 other pens which realised £89-£94. A much faster trade for the 505 breeding ewes and ewe lambs on offer and a total clearance was achieved, Richard Grigg of Kyrse, Treneglos topped the Suffolk crosses 2T at £158. Paul Webber of Ashleigh, Lifton sold two pens of Texel crosses 2T at £162. George Williams of St Kew topped the Texel cross ewe lambs at £112. H Banbury of Dowland topped the FM Mules at £138 for two pens. A good entry of 72 stock rams with 57 sold to a very strong trade. Clifford Dennis of North Tawton topped the day and had a total clearance with £500 twice, £460 and £410. Jack Neale & Sons of Wilkey Down topped the Texels at £410 and another at £400. Just a handful of Suffolks on offer topping at £400 for a shearling from Ian Braund of Whitstone.

SOUTH MOLTON

Stags report on September 30 a really super number of prime lambs this week well up on previous couple of weeks. Plenty of weight on offer today and a lot of good quality runs forward. Overall a decent entry with fewer lighter lambs this week. Trade also dearer which was expected with all buyers looking to secure lambs. Best trade for the 43-46kg lambs as well as the big heavier lambs. Lots of pens sold in excess of the £120 mark and definitely more buyers looking for those 48-50kg lambs this week. All 40kg plus lambs were £95 and above which shows the strength in the trade and that there is a lot more confidence in the future trade than the last four weeks. Topping the day at £144.50 was a pair of 62kg Charollais crosses from Mr G Mills & Partners Ltd of Witheridge closely followed at £144 to another pair of Texel crosses from Messrs T & L Cole of Heasley Mill. 64kg Charollais crosses from Mr MI Britton of Little Torrington hit £141 with £140 to 58kg Suffolk and Texel crosses from Mr MD Parkin of Ilfracombe. 65kg Charollais crosses from Mr RW Tapp & Son of South Molton realised £139 whilst £138 was achieved twice; both to 62kg Texel cross pens from Messrs AD & SM Bray of Knowstone and Messrs A & D Bray of Twitchen. £136 also a double; the first to 64kg Texel crosses from Mr AJ Webber & Son of Umberleigh and the second to 66kg Suffolk crosses from Mr W Smale of North Molton. £135.50 to 55kg Suffolk crosses again from Mr RW Tapp & Son with £133.50 to 57kg Charollais crosses from Messrs IP & L Stagg of Barnstaple. Similar 57kg Charollais crosses from Messrs CJ & SE Ley of Burrington hit £131 closely followed at £130.50 to 55kg Charollais crosses again from Mr MI Britton. Other 56.5kg Texel crosses from Messrs T & L Cole realised £130. A decent number of cull sheep today, also up on previous weeks. Not too many bigger ewes forward this week and the quality definitely not near last weeks excellent entry. Trade steadier especially for the few bigger ewes that were on offer, although plenty of buyers looking for the grazing ewes which is keeping a very decent bottom in the trade. Best Suffolk Mules this week £100 plus and best Mules £90 plus. An all girls show today with not a ram forward with top today at £109 to a Suffolk Mule from Mr D Kiff & Son of Muddiford with similar ewes from Mrs M Tapp of Molland at £107.50. Texel crosses from Mr M & Mrs Y Pearce of Harracott at £105 whilst Messrs RV & MJ Toms & Son saw their pen of Mules hit £101, same money as Messrs Pearce’s second pen of Texel crosses. £99 to two pens of whitefaces from Mr R Richards of Heasley Mill and Mr M Randall of Chulmleigh. £98 three times; the first to Suffolk crosses from Mr R Richards again; the second to Texel crosses from Mrs M Tapp again and the third to Texels from Mr J Bryant of Lynton. £97.50 to Suffolk Mules from Mr RAP Grant of Cruwys Morchard with Texels from Mr MG Kingdon of Swimbridge at £97. Texels from Messrs RT & HD Kingdon of Barnstaple hit £96 with Suffolks from Mrs M Tapp at £95. £94.50 to Suffolk Mules from Messrs AJ & NG Latham of Kings Nympton and £94 to Texel crosses from Mr M & Mrs L Gardiner of Ash Mill.

Lodge & Thomas report on September 29 an entry of 22 UTM and OTM prime cattle with trade remaining firm and greater numbers required to meet buyer demand. The premium steer was a 650kg Charolais cross from Messrs E A & A R Thomas of Sevenmiles­tone, St Agnes, which sold at 214p/kg, whilst the dearest bullock was a whopping 768p/kg Limousin cross which realised £1,574, in from Messrs R I & M A Nicholls of St Clement, Truro. Steers: Charolais cross to 214p (650kg) for Messrs E A & A R Thomas of Sevenmiles­tone, St Agnes. Heifers: Aberdeen Angus cross to 200p (615kg) for Messrs E J Pengelly & Sons of Porthpean, St Austell. OTM steers: Aberdeen Angus cross to 184p (634kg) for Messrs E J Pengelly & Sons of Porthpean, St Austell. Truro steers: Premium to 214p/kg av. 211.7p/kg. Prime to 205p/kg av. 202.7p/kg. A respectabl­e entry of 41 cull cows this week with strong fleshy types continuing to sell well. Setting the premium in the beef section was a huge 1012kg South Devon from Mr R Sadler of Falmouth, which sold for £1,609 at 159p/kg to Dawn West Devon of Hatherleig­h. Top of the dairy section was a Friesian cow from Mr D J Heller of Blackwater, Truro which realised 129p/kg. Beef cows: South Devon to 156p (1012kg) for Mr R Sadler of Mawnan, Falmouth. A quality entry of 225 stores this week with many surpassing the £1,000 mark. A large contingent of buyers saw a strong trade for all types on offer. Dearest steer, the best of a superb entry from Messrs I D & S S Backway of St Eval, Wadebridge was a Limousin cross selling to Phil Sloman of Port Isaac for £1,280. Close behind at £1,250, another steer from Messrs Backway, and a cracking Hereford cross from Messrs E, M & S Beale which sold to Messrs R M & H Eddy of Camborne. Topping out the heifers were a trio of 16m Limousin crosses from Messrs Backway, and a single Simmental cross from Mr K Thomas of Wendron, Helston, all selling for £1,060. A massive show of rearing calves this week with 161 passing through the sale ring, seeing a brisker trade with more buyers around the ring. Stirks saw good competitio­n with a pen of eight young Limousin cross steers to £600 and two Limousin cross heifers at £575 for Messrs J J & M Bowden & Son of St. Columb. Bulls: British Blue cross to £420 for W P & J Jenkin Ltd of St Martin, Helston. Heifers: Limousin cross to £380 for W P & J Jenkin Ltd of St Martin, Helston. A short entry of 109 prime lambs, with producers apprehensi­ve of the fuel shortages, but those in attendance were very well rewarded. This week’s prices were a tremendous trade, with Truro’s averages over 20p/kg higher than the South West regional averages. Prices soared to the dizzy height at £128.50 for two vendors, firstly for a fresh pair of well-finished 47kg Charollais lambs from Messrs R & J Bailey of Frogpool, purchased by Trevarthen­s of Roskrow; and also for good conformati­on heavies from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, bought by J V Rickards Ltd of Perranwell Station. Another well-finished pen from the same vendor set the premium at 277p/kg, sold to Trevarthen­s. Leading averages: 277p/kg for 45.3kg lambs from Mr R A Coad of Cubert, Newquay. Greenslade Taylor Hunt report on October 4 an increased entry of 99 fat cattle met a very similar trade. Overall a better show, which again sold to 250ppk for a very shapely, suckler bred Limousin heifer (FA) from W Moore & Sons, Rackenford, who sold another at 229.5ppk. Best type pure Limousin heifers (NA) at 242.5, 239.5 and 238.5ppk from CA Retallack, Dulverton. Indoor fed Blue heifer at 229.5ppk from SER Hunt, Kilve. White Charolais heifers at 229.5ppk again twice from G Vining, Axbridge. Further Charolais again at 229.5ppk again from SJH Butler, Flax Bourton. Steers rose to 239.5ppk for a shapely Charolais from SJH Butler again. Indoor Limousin steer at 232.5ppk from SER Hunt again. Lightweigh­t Charolais at 226.5 and 224.5 from D Marshall, Axbridge and lightweigh­t Limousin at 220.5ppk from A Roppert, Tiverton. An increased entry of 80 barren cows and cull bulls sold to a very similar trade, despite reports of reduced deadweight quotes. Top was 163.5ppk for a very smart, pure Charolais (FA) from AS Cowling, Clatworthy. Further good Charolais at 155.5ppk from MC & MG Jarvis, Ashreigney (NA). Best type Limousin cow (NA) also at 155.5ppk from RWM Westlake & Son, Churchinfo­rd. Native cows to 142.5ppk twice. Firstly for a Devon (FA) from Messrs Urch, Cheddar, who sold another at 137.5ppk. Hereford cow also at 142.5ppk (FA) from TJ Keeping, Dorset, who sold another at 139.5ppk.

Native cows to £1,087.28 from TJ Keeping. Dairy breeds sold to 161.5ppk for a younger (32m) Fleckvieh, being plain and suitable for feeding from AJ & ES Maltby. Killing cows peaked at 144.5ppk for a massive 930kg Holstein from FE Hill & Son, Stockland Lovell, who sold others at 142.5, 140.5 and 139.5ppk (4x). Friesian cow at 143.5ppk from AJ Gay & Sons Ltd, East Harptree. Kiwi cross at 139.5ppk from WR Sanders & Son, Bodmin, who sold another at 133.5ppk. Further Friesians at 134.5 and 129.5ppk from PG & JE Baker, Weston Super Mare and 129.5ppk again from WR Sanders & Son again. Further Holstein cows at 132.5ppk from W Read Partnershi­p, Taunton; 131.5ppk, DG Ham, Axbridge and 130.5ppk twice from M & K Churchill & Son, Axminster. Dairy breeds sold to the day’s top and near record level of £1,469.18 for a Holstein cow (1031kg) from FE Hill & Son, who sold others at £1,343.85 (930kg) £1,308.51 (938kg) £1,271.53 (905kg) £1,251.32 (897kg) £1,249.92 (896kg) and £1,134.14 (813kg). Exceptiona­l cows. A larger entry of 859 lambs sold to a dearer trade for the lighter lambs and a similar very strong trade for the heavier lambs. The best sold to 255ppk from Somerset Lamb Ltd. Others 251ppk from GB & MA Holloway and PJ Holloway; 249, 247, 245 and 243ppk from Tom Bamlet Farming; 247 and 245ppk from ML & EE Edwards; 246 (2x) from LA Read; 245ppk from RF Patten and MW & S Edwards and 244ppk from DJ & DA Boyce and A Wills. Heavier lambs sold to £158, £140.50 and £137 from GB & MA Holloway. Others £147 and £140.50 from PJ Holloway; £141.50, £135.50, £135 and £133 from J Sprake & Partners Ltd; £140 from LA Read; £135 from ML & EE Edwards and DT & DA Bloyce and £130 from Tom Bamlet Farming. Overall average £108.78.

Kivells report on October 1 store steers topping at £1515 for a trio of British Blue steers (23m) from Chris Poad of St Domminick followed by later born Blue’s (20m) from the Richard Widger Partnershi­p of Aveton Gifford at £1425. South Devon steers (20m) saw a pen of six rise to £1450 apiece for John Ball of Stoke Gabriel closely followed by a single of a similar age from David Goss of Littlehemp­ston which went on to make £1440. The heifer section was headed by MH & SRS Eggins of Roborough, Plymouth with a solitary Charolais (21m) making £1280 with their next best back at £1170 with ones (18m) to £1040 for a bunch of Six from David and Wendy Holland. British Blue heifers on the wanted list once more with a couple (24m) from J Cornish and Sons, Holcombe Rogus fetching £1240 apiece and four from John Searle of Crediton returning £1190 ahead. A cracking entry in terms of numbers met an overall harder trade. Suckler types and older wellpresen­ted cattle continuing to meet demand. Weathered, younger stirks meeting a lesser demand. FR Gillard of Cheriton Bishop topped proceeding­s with dairy bred Charolais crosses (12m) achieving £755 with Blues out of the same shed reaching £720. A reasonable show of heifers topped at £650 for a good pen of dairy-bred Blues (11m) from WR Strawbridg­e & Son of Dolton. Similar Blue heifers from WL Jasper & Son attained £640 with Limousin heifers of a similar age reaching £625. Angus heifers from Trevor Chugg levelled out at £600 (8m), the same figure achieved by FR Gillard presenting Charolais crosses.

Younger neat heifers selling well and reaching £525 for Angus’ from DW Andrews. Hereford heifers from Sophie Jasper of Penance reached £520 (6m), whilst sweet Limousin crosses again from FR Gillard attained £520 (5m). A super entry of calves saw an excellent trade from start to finish for all but the small and crossbred calves. Top of the day was £480 for a super muscled Limousin bull from Paul & Claire Hendy of Kingsbridg­e. Native calves topped at £410 for an Aberdeen Angus bull from Dallyns Dairy Ltd of Barnstaple with others to £350 for Kathryn Starr of Dunkeswell. Heifers topped at £385 for a super Limousin from Paul & Claire Hendy with others to £310 for Kathryn Starr. Native heifers topped at £295 for an Aberden Angus heifer from Dallyns Dairy Ltd with younger sorts to £250 and £240 twice for Graham Heard of Broadclyst. Friesians were a steady trade and looked decent value for the quality. Top was £145 for Adam Westaway who sold others to £125 and £80. The dispersal of the Culmside herd of 130 pedigree Holsteins on behalf of David, Beryl & Matt Lewis of Cullompton, Devon, attracted great interest with a super trade seen from start to finish. 13 sold over 2000gns to a top of 2800gns for the much admired red and white heifer “Culmside Rowan Xanthia Red VG85” by Rockset Rowan Red, she sold due in November to Arino Red to Messrs MF Yendell & Son of Crediton. An excellent entry of 163 pigs saw a superb trade for the prime pigs whilst the cull sows saw a very depressed trade with buyers very cautious. A good entry of cull sows in terms of quality but like other markets in the UK trade was desperate. Overall top call of £70 with the vast majority between £35-£50. Trade for prime and store pigs was really strong for the right article today with three abattoir buyers and four farm shops batting well. Andrew Freemantle kicked the auction off with a quality run of 20 white finished pigs (94kg) topping at £115 going off to Messrs Davis of Honiton. Next up was Messrs Turner of Exmoor who sold a smart line of 95kg prime pigs to £130 which was a price matched by Richard Knox of Whiddon Down for the next of his three pens of heavies. Messrs Parkin of West Buckland saw their next best prime pigs to £100 (x12) with others from Chris Down of Budleigh Salterton at £118. A nice entry of store pigs saw three pens of young stores from Messrs Turner of Barnstaple top at £35. A slightly smaller entry of 1583 store lambs sold to a much stronger trade with more buyers forward and more confidence within these buyers. All lambs looking £5 dearer on the week with some almost £8 or £10. Top money of £111 and £109 came from Mike Stanbury of Throwleigh, Mark & John Moore of Rackenford had their best at £110, Tripp Bros & Sons of Dunsford had a great run at £109 (x3) with others at £107 and Neil Hardy of Crediton also reached £109 followed closely by Alistair & Thomasina Wilmington of Branscombe at £108. Plenty of other pens over £100 with medium keep sorts usually in the £90’s and longer term lambs usually all £78 plus. Overall average of £84.95 is £5 dearer on the week. Grazers sold to £90 for Georgina Came of Ashburton and £89 for both Messrs Bateman of Stockland and Colin Burrough of Axminster with plenty of others from £70 to £88. Breeders saw rams top at £450 twice for Steve & Rachel Lang of Plympton followed by John & Diane Vooght of Liverton with a pair at £320, Kenn’s Rich Berry sold a brace at £300 and Reg & Annie Pedrick of Ashburton also sold rams at £300 and £280 (x3). A very mixed entry of females saw Messrs Cornelius of St Breward top the trade with young sheep at £102.
