Speedway fans to honour Mauger
SIX-TIMES world speedway champion Ivan Mauger was the greatest speedway rider of all time and Exmouth-based enthusiast Robert Doran has been collecting the Champion’s memorabilia for more than 35 years.
On Saturday, he will be staging a ‘Remembering Ivan Mauger’ event at the St Thomas Social and Working Men’s Club, at 67a Cowick Street, Exeter, EX4 1HW, when speedway fans will get a splendid opportunity to see one of the finest collections of Mauger Memorabilia in the world.
The collection ranges from Ivan’s bikes and equipment, helmets and leathers, and trophies through to photographs and documents.
Ivan, who died in April 2018, described Robert’s famous Exeter Speedway museum as the ’best single club speedway exhibition in the world’ so it is fitting that Robert’s extensive collection of specialised Ivan Mauger memorabilia will be a rare opportunity for Falcons and Ivan fans to see this collection all in one place.
Several rare items will also be coming from Australia and Canada especially for the occasion.
The Exhibition will be open during the day, and then in the evening a special forum with be held in which several of Ivan’s friends and colleagues will talk about his life.
These will include Peter Oakes, his manager, who also fulfilled many other roles in Ivan’s career, and Jim Hone whose parents looked after Ivan and Raye in their early life at Wimbledon when they first came to England as teenagers.
Gordon Stobbs, who was Ivan’s mechanic for much of his career, Norrie Allen who was also his mechanic and his brother, Ronnie, a senior referee, who helped with sponsorship will also be present.
There will be a video link with Ivan’s son, Kym, in Australia. Several other speedway celebrities will also be there.
The evening will be hosted by former BBC sports editor Vic Morgan and the event will be filmed by Re-Run Productions.
Admission to the Exhibition will be between 11.30am and 4pm with tickets priced at £2, while tickets for the evening forum will be £10 per person, which includes the Exhibition.
All proceeds will go to the Speedway Riders Benevolent Fund and World Speedway Riders Association.
