Frightfully good reads
With Halloween coming up fast, these tales are sure to send shivers down the spines of young readers
IT WAS a dark and stormy night… All Hallow’s Eve is the best time for ghost stories and we have a few favourites in our haunted house.
We love seeing skeletons sneak about town in Funnybones by Janet and Allan Ahlberg while the adventures of Mildred Hubble from Jill Murphy’s Worst Witch series are perfect for sharing aloud at bedtime.
Here are a few new titles creeping onto our bookshelf this year.
Kids often run for cover when faced with a plate full of veg, but Supertato: Night of the Living Veg by Sue Hendra and Paul Linnet (£6.99, Simon and Schuster) takes it to a new level.
It’s fright-time in the supermarket, and Supertato can see that the veggies are seriously spooked. There are strange shapes and eerie shuffling noises in the aisles… whatever can be behind these ghostly goings-on? Could it be the Evil Pea? Or something even more sinister?
For independent readers looking for adventure, Following
Frankenstein by
Catherine Bruton (£7.99, Nosy Crow) is packed with spinetingling thrills.
Based around events in Mary Shelley’s classic tale, this is the story of Maggie, whose father has dedicated his life to hunting down the monster created by Victor Frankenstein.
The quest sees him voyage to the Arctic where he hopes to find the monster at last. Maggie secretly stows away only to make a shocking discovery – Frankenstein’s monster has a son.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid fans are in for a treat (not to mention a few tricks) courtesy of Greg Heffley’s best mate.
As Rowley Jefferson’s Awesome Friendly Spooky Stories by Jeff Kinney (£12.99, Puffin) unfolds, you’ll meet a baby vampire, a modern-day mummy, a gaming ghost and many more. Experience Rowley’s twisted, unexpectedly hilarious imagination in this collection of comically terrifying tales, peppered with brilliant illustrations. A great book to read while munching through your trick-or-treat haul.
Speaking of treats… don’t forget to save some chocolate wrappers for this week’s craft project. Happy Halloween!
