Get ready to ramble!

Wrap up warm to embrace the season of chills and thrills and have fun walking your way into winter

- JANET TANSLEY Family Time Correspondent

IT was fell walker Alfred Wainwright who said there was no such thing as bad weather – just ‘unsuitable’ clothing.

So there’s no excuse for not getting out and on your feet this winter – and The Ramblers have come up with a great way to make it even more fun for the family.

Their ‘Walk Your Way in Winter’ campaign runs from now until the end of January 2022 and, in a bid to encourage us all to wrap up and embrace the season, it’s created a free downloadable ‘bingo card’ packed with inspiration, tips and challenges to try out.

Things you can mark off when you’re out include:

* Finding edible plants on your way. * Spotting wildlife on a walk

* Trying a new walking route

And it also has challenges like setting a new distance to achieve, or catching the sunrise on a hike, plus loads of other hints and tips.

Ramblers’ Bran Devey says: “Getting out in winter is so important for us as a family – it’s a chance to let off some steam and feel the elements.

“My three-year-old daughter loves it, whether it’s exploring rockpools on the coast, playing hide and seek or collecting leaves and sticks in the woods or throwing stones in the river, she’s in her element, full of laughter and joy.”

And she adds: “As a parent I think it’s so important for the whole family to connect with nature and experience the seasons even if the weather can be challenging – as long as we’re wrapped up it’s not an issue, and there’s always the hot chocolate to warm us up when we get home.”
