Another wild bird death near quay

-

A DEAD swan has been found on the banks of the River Exe – the latest wild bird death near Exeter Quay.

A photo, taken on Sunday by a passer-by, shows the creature close to the Port Royal pub with Trews Weir in the background.

It is the latest in a spate of swan or geese deaths on the river. Although the cause is not known, an investigation by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is ongoing into previous incidents, with an outbreak of avian flu a possibility.

Incidents of birds found passed away at different locations alongside the quayside, including near the main bridge by Puerto Lounge and outside the Port Royal pub, have been reported to the RSCPA and Defra.

The RSPCA has previously confirmed it is aware of several swans and geese who have died at Exeter Quay. Defra has collected some carcasses to carry out tests.

On March 25, a dead swan was reported in Cricklepit Leat, next to the Mace shop. The landlord of The Prospect has told how a dead swan had remained visible at the quay for some time. Sightings of dead birds have also been reported to Devon Wildlife Trust. A spokesperson for Defra said: “Investigations are ongoing into the wild bird deaths reported in the Exeter Quay area of Devon.”

Avian influenza is a notifiable, infectious disease that affects wild, captive and commercially raised birds. Anyone who finds dead wild waterfowl (swans, geese or ducks) or other dead wild birds should call the Defra help-line on 03459 335577. Do not pick up dead birds.
