House for sale in Cornwall for £130,000

ACORNISH housing association has put a home on the market for under £150,000 – and promises it will only go to a local buyer if bids arrive early.

Coastline Housing put the onebedroom terrace house at 23 Castle Green, Helston, up for sale for £130,000.

It is significantly cheaper than most other homes of a similar size on sale in Cornwall, with a shortage of homes and high demand driving up prices across the county.

However, while the price appears to be a steal, the listing states that the property is in need of “complete refurbishment throughout” and described it as a “project”.

Coastline, which helps house locals struggling to find a place to live, has said that people with a “connection to the parish” can place bids in on the home before it is placed on the open market later this month.

Until April 27, only those with a local link can submit an offer on the twostorey, one-bedroom property. After that date, the house will be on the open market and free for anyone with the cash to snap up.

The property has a lounge and kitchen on the ground floor and a bathroom and bedroom on the first floor.

Helston Town Council shared details about the property on its social media accounts. The council said: “As part of Coastline Housing’s disposal programme, they are selling 23 Castle Green in Helston at a guide price of £130,000.

“They would like to give people with a connection to the parish the first opportunity to purchase the property before it is placed on the open market on April 27. All proceeds of the sale will be reinvested back into affordable housing. If you are interested, please contact Mathers on 01326 565016 or email sales@thematherpartnership.co.uk.”

Coastline selling some of its stock has prompted strong criticism of the social housing provider in the past, but it has explained that it does not do it for profit. Last year, its chief executive, Allister Young, said only a “very small minority” of its stock is ever sold, following reports that 200 homes had been sold over five years.

It says the income from selling homes that are no longer viable is invested in creating more housing. Mr Young said that, while 200 homes had been sold, nearly 1,100 new homes had been provided.
