It comes as police confirm that a 13-year-old passed away following a tragic incident at an industrial estate in Okehampton on Wednesday, April 13, at 5.15pm.

A fitting memorial is planned and a book of condolences will be opened at Okehampton College after the school’s Easter break. Support for all students is being offered.

Police were called and the Health and Safety Executive have been informed. Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

In a statement, the Health and Safety Executive said: “HSE attended the scene with the police and we assisted with their investigation.”

In a statement, Okehampton College principal Craig Griffiths said: “It is with profound sadness that we share the devastating news of the sudden, tragic death of one of our students yesterday. Our most heartfelt condolences and thoughts are with the student’s family.”

In a letter to all students, Mr Griffiths added: “It is with deep sadness and regret that I write to inform you about the tragic death yesterday of one of our students, Jethro Middleton in Year 8.

“Our most heartfelt condolences and thoughts are with Jethro’s family. I would ask that their privacy is respected at this incredibly difficult time, and that we avoid rumour and speculation surrounding the circumstances of Jethro’s sudden death.

“We will arrange for a book of condolences for students, parents and staff to sign and in due course will plan a fitting memorial.”

A statement by Devon and Cornwall Police said: “Emergency services attended the scene where it was reported that a 13-year-old had fallen from a height and sustained multiple injuries. He received emergency aid but was confirmed deceased at the scene. His next of kin have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.”
