Holmes’ moor tale is brought to life

AN exhibition devoted to Sherlock Holmes’ most terrifying adventure is being staged on Dartmoor.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was inspired by the dark, forbidding moors when he penned The Hound of the Baskervilles, and the eerie atmosphere of the story is brought to life in the exhibition at the National Park Visitor Centre in Princetown.

Places in the famous novel, written in 1901, are being brought to life by local photographer Chris Bloodworth. There is also an opportunity for people to visit the very place where Conan Doyle stayed while writing the iconic crime mystery.

Formerly the Duchy Hotel, it is believed Conan Doyle wrote part of the story while staying there. Not only did he find inspiration in the moor’s forbidding-looking bogs but it is said the driver of his horsedrawn coach was named Baskerville.

Chris, who lives near the national park, said he was pleased to be showing his work. “I live nearby and have been lucky enough to work on projects celebrating the landscape’s beauty,” he said. “Dartmoor inspires so many with its diverse, bleak and beautiful landscape. It’s easy to see why it inspired Conan Doyle.”

Rebecca Martin, Dartmoor National Park Authority’s visitor services manager, said: “Chris has exhibited his work with us before and we’re delighted to welcome him back.

“People can discover more through his exhibition then venture outside and explore the wonderful open landscape around Princetown. It will make for a great adventure into Dartmoor’s landscape and the famous story inspired by it.”
