Brilliant Grecians set sights on the title

-

HAVING finally achieved that elusive promotion to League One, Exeter City are not done yet. Now they want to emulate the stars of 1990 and go up as champions, writes Dan Clark.

The 1989/90 season saw the Grecians win what was then the fourth division and lift the only silverware in their 121-year history. But after the 2-1 win over Barrow on Tuesday night, and Forest Green Rovers’ 2-1 defeat at Swindon Town, the pair are level on points with two games to go.

The Green Devils are still top of the table - they have an eight goal superior goal difference . But having been 17 points behind in February, Matt Taylor’s side have now wiped out the deficit.

While Taylor was reluctant to think about the title after the weekend’s win over Rochdale, now City are promoted, it is back on the agenda as a target. “It is on now,” he said, when asked about it as the next challenge.

He added: “There are two games to go and we are all square. But let us enjoy tonight as we have all earned the right and can enjoy this moment. Then when it is right, we will focus on Northampton and we go there with no pressure whatsoever for the first time in a long time.

“We are not thinking yet about who is in League One next season but to be level on top when we were not long ago nearly 15 points behind, it is incredible to have pulled it back. The players can celebrate as much as they like.

“Now we are in League One, we hopefully won’t be begging people to come to Exeter City. People will want to come to us. They can see the project, the plan, and League One football as well.”

Captain Matt Jay added: “The title is still there if we want it - and we do.”
