Plenty of buyers keen to spend at first Chagford sale of 2022
A LARGE crowd of buyers enjoyed sunny weather at Chagford Market for the first sale of the year at this popular Dartmoor venue.
A small entry of cattle kicked off the bidding on Saturday, April 30, meeting an easier than expected trade due to concerns over the dry conditions. Yearling Limousin steers from Tony Mears sold to £830, with his heifers to £790. South Devon cross British Blue heifers sold to £655 for Frank Martin of Poundsgate.
Next to come under the gavel was a good entry of couples, which met spirited bidding, with a single Texel FM ewe from Stan Mortimore of
Moretonhampstead topping the sale at £186. Regular vendors, F Janes & Son, saw their couples attracting good interest, to a top price of £175 for single Texel crosses.
Whiteface Dartmoors from O & A Mortimore sold to £160, Greyface Dartmoors to £104 for C Pearse & Son, and Charollais singles sold to £165 for Tony Mears. Anne Cole sold Scotties to £74 for singles, Alex Christopher sold double couples to £180. Valais hoggs sold to £155 for Toby Ford. An entry of single Cheviot mules from HT Davis sold to £130. Empty ewes sold to £99, ewe lambs to £110 and hoggs to £86.
An entry of 250 machinery and sundries lots saw the top prices include metal gates to £62, wooden gates to £36, garden feeders to £20, trailer hitches to £42, stakes to £40, plastic barrels to £20, milk churns to £65, lawnmowers to £34, a fox trap to £60, chainsaws to £42, hedge trimmers to £31, a footbath to £28, roof sheets to £35, a quantity of mesh to £115, a sheep feeding system to £40 and chains to £25.
