Argyle will go away for some of pre-season

PLYMOUTH Argyle will have a training camp away from their regular Harper’s Park base during pre-season, Steven Schumacher has confirmed.

Schumacher would not give any more details on that, or the warm-up matches that the Pilgrims will be playing in preparation for their 2022/23 League One campaign.

Plymouth Parkway will almost certainly provide the opposition for one of the pre-season games, though, as that has become an annual fixture between the teams at Bolitho Park.

Argyle have not been away on a training camp since Ryan Lowe took his squad to Scotland in 2019 because of the coronavirus pandemic. The players will report back for pre-season six weeks today on Tuesday, June 21, with the EFL campaign beginning on Saturday, July 30.

Schumacher said: “Players these days come back (for preseason) in unbelievable condition. They are all so vain! The bodies on them is sickening.”

On a serious note, he added: “They look after themselves. They are a different breed of player now to when me and Ryan (Lowe) were even playing.

“The mentality is different. When everybody does get back they are ready to go. We will have three days in and then we will end up having five full weeks of preseason training.”

Asked about pre-season games and a training camp away from Plymouth, Schumacher replied: “Nothing to confirm, I will let the club put all that out whenever they do.

“Everything is kind of in hand, pretty much sorted throughout the whole lot. We will be going away for a break. I think a change of scenery is always beneficial, especially if we bring in a few new players.”

Argyle will find out their schedule for the 2022/23 League One season when the fixtures are released on Thursday, June 23.
