WHAT CAR? SAYS

THE VOLKSWAGEN TOURAN is proof that spending a little extra money can get you much more than just a functional box on wheels. This classy MPV comes with not only seven good-sized seats and a very saloonlike driving position but also a quality feel to the materials and controls, giving it a more upmarket ambience than cheaper rivals such as the Citroën Grand C4 Spacetourer.

Average-sized adults will be comfortable even in the third row of seats, and the Touran has more Iso x mountings for child seats than most seven-seaters, o ering them on all of its middle and rearmost seats. And the Touran’s boot is bigger than those of rivals.

Although two diesel options are available, we’d go for the 148bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine; it o ers the best blend of performance, purchase price and running costs, plus you can now get it with our favourite trim, SE Family, which comes with niceties such as a panoramic glass roof, front and rear parking sensors and an 8.0in touchscreen infotainment system with sat-nav.

What’s more, the Touran is great to drive by MPV standards, with predictable, well-weighted steering and nimble handling.
