What’s changing with the plug-in car grant?

-

Can you tell me where I stand with changes that have been made to the plug-in car grant?

In February I ordered a new Tesla Model 3 that cost more than £50,000. My order agreement shows the UK Government Plug-in Grant of £3500 taken o the total price.

I have asked Tesla to con rm if the grant is still valid for vehicles on order and they have responded to say they are trying to clarify the situation. I’d like to know up front if the grant is not available, because I’ll have to cover the additional £3500.

Can you let me know if I’ll be able to get the grant?

Phil Maltby WHAT CAR? SAYS…

Although the plug-in grant for electric cars was extended for another three years in the March budget, the amount was reduced from £3500 to £3000, with buyers of cars costing more than £50,000 becoming ineligible for support.

However, as long as your dealer submitted the plug-in grant application before the changes came into effect on 12 March, you should still be entitled to receive the £3500 electric car incentive. Applications received after that date will be given the lower £3000 grant, but only when buying a pure electric car priced at less than £50,000.

Motorists who chose a Tesla as their company car will benefit from the latest cuts in benefit-in-kind (BIK) company car tax for pure electric cars. From 6 April, all zeroemissions cars will be placed in the 0% BIK bracket, rather than be taxed at the previous rate of 16%.
