‘It’ll be tweaked by the engineers behind the brand’s fine-handling Giulia and Stelvio’

IF YOU LOOKED up the family tree of the new Alfa Romeo Milano, you’d discover that it has more relatives than you might think. That’s because, under the surface, it shares its underpinnings with the Fiat 600e, Jeep Avenger and Peugeot e-2008.

However, Alfa Romeo’s first electric car will have its own distinct character compared with those cars, with a bespoke design and a more premium interior. What’s more, it’s promised that the Milano’s mechanical package will be honed so it drives like an Alfa Romeo should; it’ll be tweaked by a team of engineers that worked on both the Giulia executive saloon and Stelvio family SUV – two of the besthandling cars in their respective classes.

Like the Avenger, the Milano will be offered with a choice of front-wheel drive or fourwheel drive. In the former configuration, power comes from a 154bhp electric motor and 50.8kwh (usable capacity) battery, giving the Milano very similar performance to the Avenger; 0-62mph takes 9.0sec. Official range for the front-wheel-drive car is around 250 miles; that’s slightly less than the 260 miles that the Smart #1 Pro+ can officially manage.

Details have yet to be announced for the dual-motor, four-wheel-drive version, but we expect a total of around 250bhp, which should bring the 0-62mph time down to around 7.0sec. This extra power could come at the cost of range, though, with an official figure of around 200 miles likely.

From launch, the Milano will be offered in Perfo, Veloce and limited-run Launch Edition trim levels, with prices expected to start from around £38,000. This could make it more expensive than similarly premium rivals, including the #1 (which starts at £31,950) and Volvo EX30 (£33,795).
