New electric SUV aims to mix green credentials with off-road ability On sale Spring 2027

Price from £90,000 (est)

AS MORE TOURISTS warm up to the idea of climate change, the business of ecoadventuring is booming. Indeed, whether it’s hiking through protected woodland or offsetting your travel footprint, adventurers can now trek consciously. And for the sustainable safari of the future, the new Ineos Fusilier could be a worthy companion – even if you’re only trekking to the shops.

This new electric SUV is intended to offer off-road capability to match the hardiest 4x4s, and will count the upcoming electric Land Rover Defender Sport and Mercedes-benz EQG among its key rivals.

Slightly shorter and lower than its combustion-powered Ineos Grenadier sibling, the Fusilier sports a similarly rugged look, with a boxy shape, tall windows, roof rails and rounded LED headlights.

Few technical details have been revealed yet, but the car’s engineers are targeting an official range of 249 miles. That’s as far as the Jeep Avenger can manage from its 50.8kwh (usable capacity) battery and is competitive with what Land Rover is targeting from the electric Defender Sport. Expect the EQG, with its 100kwh battery, to go significantly farther.

Recognising that charging points aren’t always available away from the Tarmac, the Fusilier will be offered as a range extender as well as a fully electric model. In the former guise, a small petrol engine will act as a generator to keep the battery topped up, allowing you to keep going but never directly powering the wheels.

Like the Grenadier, the Fusilier will come with four-wheel drive and a range of driver aids geared towards different types of terrain.

While we’re yet to see inside the Fusilier, it’s likely that the five-seat SUV will have a slightly more modern approach than the Grenadier, with a larger digital instrument cluster and infotainment touchscreen. We were impressed by the quick responses of the Grenadier’s 12.3in screen, and that it has a dial controller, making it easier to use than touchscreen-only set-ups.

Prices for the Fusilier are expected to start at around £90,000. That’s a step up from the Grenadier (which costs from £79,140) but cheaper than the £100,000 Mercedes-benz is expected to charge for the EQG.
