WHETHER IT’S A hug from a loved one, a nicely chilled glass of wine or perhaps a butler offering a hot towel, everyone likes to be welcomed home at the end of a long day. And while my Genesis GV70 can’t offer a warm embrace, serve beverages or hand me fluffy flannels, it does provide a welcoming light show.
When I approach the car at night and unlock it via the key fob, small puddles of light appear on the ground below the GV70’S doors, complete with Genesis logos. These illuminate the area to stop me from stepping into any actual puddles.
The light show continues inside, because the centre console, climate control panel and doors are all bathed in coloured lights, which help to give the GV70 a calming atmosphere. It was this which a friend first commented on when I gave him a lift recently, noting that although he hadn’t heard of Genesis before, he was impressed with the look of my car’s interior.
As we headed towards our bi-weekly Dungeons and Dragons game, his appraisal moved to the seats, which he described as “comfortable yet supportive”, and the materials surrounding the dashboard, which he liked for their softness. Here it’s worth noting that I specified the £2350 Nappa Leather Pack, which really makes a difference.
In fact, I think he was seriously tempted by the GV70 until I told him my car’s average fuel consumption, which is currently just over 21mpg. And that’s despite me having left the drive mode selector firmly in its Eco setting after the first few weeks, when I realised how much petrol I was getting through.
I’m hoping some long motorway runs will help to improve efficiency, but even the official test suggests I’m unlikely to see more than 29mpg – something you need to be aware of with the GV70 going in. Perhaps I will need that drink when I get home, after all.
