Cambridge Audio CXN V2
£799
Cambridge Audio’s CXN streamer has sat atop a competitive market for seven years now. This is actually the second version of the CXN, but the changes from the first model are so slight, particularly in terms of sound quality, let’s think of it more as a seventh win for one product than a fourth for a new one.
The second gen model features increased processing power for a better digital experience, the headline being the addition of Google Chromecast; so it’s less of a replacement than an improved prospect for future customers. Regardless, it remains the hugely enjoyable sonic performance that singles the CXN out.
It sounds fantastic – there’s an enthusiastic drive to the performance, combining subtlety, snappy timing and rich detail. It’s a punchy, entertaining sound that has a really good grasp of rhythm and low-end impact.
We’ve seldom heard a Cambridge Audio product sound so muscular. Bass lines are meaty and textured. The start and end of notes are precisely delivered, and there’s seemingly no end to the streamer’s energetic drive. The CXN is skilful at conveying the space between instruments, too, filling the room with easy dynamics.
The sound isn’t overly smooth, but the Cambridge delivers a full-bodied performance that’s pleasing to listen to. The midrange in particular sounds lovely, with voices packed with character. The CXN isn’t fussy with file type, it sounds fluid and dynamic with hi-res and Spotify-streamed tracks alike.
From Airplay and Chromecast to Spotify Connect, network streaming, Tidal and internet radio, plus digital connections including USB, optical and coaxial, your options are near limitless. The CXN, then, remains a winner – no matter how many times this sensational streamer has come out on top.
