Aunt Ruth quits the whisky business leaving Al (Joe Absolom) in the lurch, but Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) has a plan. She approaches Ken about Al taking over the running of the pub. Meanwhile, there’s disaster when Clive takes up race-walking in a bid to get fitter…

Aunt Ruth was contemplating selling her farm last week, leaving business partners Bert and Al (Ian McNeice and Joe Absolom) in the lurch, along with their failed whisky venture. Now her mind is made up and it’s bye bye distillery, hello estate agents.

‘As usual with Bert, the business hasn’t panned out well,’ says Dame Eileen Atkins, who plays Ruth. ‘I was hoping we’d get some drunk scenes before it folded, but sadly not. Now Ruth wants to save Al – she’ll go through a lot with him, but I think it will be alright in the end.’

But all is not lost for

Al. Morwenna (Jessica Ransom) comes up with an idea to help. She approaches Ken about Al taking over the running of the pub. But will things turn out for the best?

Ruth has also been keeping an eye on her grumpy nephew, Martin and supporting Louisa (Caroline Catz) as she re-trains as a therapist. ‘She wasn’t mad about Louisa at first, but she’s quite taken with her now,’ says Dame Eileen. ‘Ruth is very keen on Louisa making this step forward in her career and doing something quite different.’
