Victoria and Albert’s marriage is tested to the limit in this week’s dramatic final episode when Albert makes a critical political mistake and then ends up blowing his top over Lehzen’s control over his wife, especially when he believes her influence is putting their children’s health at risk. But when tragedy strikes, where do Victoria’s loyalties lie – with Lehzen or Albert?
After all the fun and frolics in Scotland last week, things get very serious for Queen Victoria and Prince Albert as a shock death, illness, and controversial politics send shockwaves around the Palace and Parliament in this week’s final episode.
The strained relationship between Albert, Victoria and her close confidante Lehzen reaches boiling point when Albert can no longer hide his frustration about the control he thinks Lehzen has over his wife, especially when it comes to their children’s health.
‘With Victoria and Albert you have complete opposites, which on paper should never work,’ says Jenna Coleman, who plays the Queen. ‘Albert is a rational and sensitive man, while Victoria is selfish, impulsive and passionate.’
The couple has to put all the tension to one side, however, when they face their worst nightmare yet as parents…
There’s futher turmoil as Prime Minister Robert Peel faces a political battle, and Albert makes things worse, jeopardising everything they have fought for.
When tragedy strikes, will Victoria and Albert realise sacrifices will have to be made in their private and political lives?
Jenna thinks this second series has shown viewers a different side to Victoria.
‘I hope it's empowering for women,’ she says. ‘It’s an extraordinary story of a very relatable spirit in unique circumstances. I hope the audience feel they have a window into the era of Victoria and Albert and ultimately to go beyond the portraits and get to know them for the people they were.’
