Kip Glaspie is a no-nonsense detective who investigates a sinister murder in a starstudded, four-part drama set in London.
It begins when a pizza delivery driver is shot dead, yet what seems like a random act of violence has dark repercussions for all who get caught up in the investigation...
‘Kip is practical and ambitious,’ explains Carey Mulligan, who plays her. ‘She’s very decisive and she feels things and wants to help people, but she doesn’t show her emotions and you certainly won’t see her crying.’
After arriving on the scene, Kip discovers the murder victim was an illegal immigrant. The only witness to the murder is a student who spent the evening clubbing and taking drugs…
Complexities
As the investigation continues, the murder sets in motion a chain of events that affects the lives of local Labour MP David Mars (John Simm), his unpredictable ex-wife, Karen (Billie Piper) – who ordered the pizza in the first place – and local vicar Jane Oliver (Nicola Walker).
‘It’s a drama that has something to say about modern Britain,’ explains Carey, 32, whose hit Hollywood movies include The Great Gatsby,
Suffragette and Drive. ‘It has mystery, but it’s also a thought-provoking series that will start conversations.’
Baby news
After so many years away from British TV, Carey admits playing an unusual London detective – Kip is also a famous former champion pole-vaulter – was a dream role for her. Yet when the drama’s writer, David Hare, offered her the part she feared she’d have to turn it down because she’d just discovered she was pregnant…
‘David said he didn’t see any reason why Kip couldn’t also be pregnant,’ Carey says. ‘He made a few small changes to the script here and there, but barely changed anything about the series overall. It wasn’t a problem for me until the end of the shoot, when I was seven months pregnant and the baby was kicking me a lot during filming!’
