Killing on the cards

A tarot reading and a shocking confession…

-

When a customer came into Jayne Braiden’s shop on the Brighton seafront for a tarot reading in May 2015, she recognised him – she’d done readings for him several times before.

This time, however, when 49-year-old Star Randel-Hanson picked the Devil card, he broke down in tears.

‘He said, “I killed him”,’ says Jayne in this week’s final episode of Murdertown. ‘He knew there was no going back.’

A violent row

Jayne calmly kept Randel-Hanson talking and bravely told him she’d have to call the police. At first, however, they thought Jayne’s bizarre call was a hoax.

But when officers visited the flat Randel-Hanson shared with his friend Derick Marney, 70, they found Derick’s bloodied body on the kitchen floor.

The two had met at a spiritualist church, but their friendship had turned sour.

Randel-Hanson had stabbed Derick multiple times during an argument.

Bizarrely, he hadn’t tried to dispose of the body or call the police. For 10 days, he’d gone about life in the flat as normal, with Derick dead in the kitchen.

In May 2016, Randel-Hanson was found guilty of murder and sentenced to life with a minimum term of 15 years.

‘He could have saved Derick, but he didn’t,’ says Jayne. ‘He also had the opportunity to stop, but he actually chose a bigger knife to do more damage.’
