What an amazing world!
Romesh Ranganathan shares a few of his favourite travel misadventures...
Mongolia, Colombia and the Arctic were among the far-flung destinations Romesh Ranganathan visited for his BBC2 Misadventures series.
Now, from the safety of his sofa, the comedian looks at the highlights and chats to those who took him under their wing in this three-parter.
‘It’s like a best-of series but with unseen footage and me catching up with the people who showed me round,’ explains dad-of-three Romesh.
Fishy encounter
First to feature are his trips to Zimbabwe, Bosnia and Morocco. ‘Sitting in Victoria Falls with my co-host Chipo was amazing but also terrifying,’ says Romesh. ‘What you couldn’t see were the tiny fish in the water who like nibbling feet. What you really don’t want when you’re sat at the edge of a sheer drop is the urge to recoil from nibbling fish!’
Attending a voodoo ceremony in Haiti, scaling cliffs in Ethiopia, visiting the home of the late drugs baron Pablo Escobar in Colombia and getting a tattoo in Albania all featured on his travels – but when asked what his highlights were, Romesh says he loved the animal encounters. As well as getting up close to a cheetah, elephants and a group of hippos in Africa, it was his trip to the Arctic that stands out.
Animal adventures
‘Seeing a polar bear was absolutely amazing. It was one of the best things that’s ever happened to me, to see an animal like that in its natural habitat was just incredible,’ says Romesh, who has plans to return with a third series of Misadventures in the future. ‘Having the chance to have these experiences is such a great
privilege.’
