SATURDAY 11 July, 8.25pm BBC1 Drama

After a short break, Casualty is back! Charlie Fairhead makes a welcome return to work after his reconciliation with Connie, but late wife Duffy is still very much on his mind. Heart-transplant patient Hafiz is admitted to the ED, and Charlie wonders if he was the recipient of Duffy’s donated organs, which triggers painful memories for the fragile nurse. Also this week, there’s tension between Dylan and Faith, and Jade confronts her past…

Nurse Jade Lovall is on tenterhooks as she prepares to meet her birth mum, Susie, and find out why she was put into foster care as a child. In this week’s special episode focusing on the hearing-impaired nurse’s world, viewers get a glimpse into Jade’s past and how she copes with daily life.

Overwhelming

‘This episode allows viewers to see what it’s like living as Jade. We hear and see what’s overwhelming and difficult for her,’ says Gabriella Leon, who plays Jade, and who has lived with a hearing impairment known as cookie bite hearing loss since birth.

‘Like myself, on top of her condition, Jade suffers with hyperacusis, a sensitivity to loud noises. It causes pain in her ears. Doors banging are a trigger. Metal bins are also a big no-no!’

After her shift, a nervous Jade meets with Susie. Jade believed she was abandoned because of her hearing, but it turns out Susie is deaf!

Before Jade can get any answers, Susie’s mum Theresa – Jade’s grandma – turns up and demands to know why Susie left home in a hurry. There’s an argument between the two women and Susie blindly walks into a busy road. When Jade rushes to help, Susie begs Jade to hide her identity from Theresa…

‘Luckily she’s there as a nurse and assists Susie. This is one of the hardest days of her life. She knows very little about her life before foster care and wants to know what happened. There are so many emotions!’ says Gabriella.

‘All I can say is that

Jade’s day gets a lot worse. There are shocks, confusion and even more unanswered questions!’
