THE LUMINARIES
Sunday, 9pm BBC1 Drama
Anna Wetherell finally faces trial for the murder of Crosbie Wells in the last episode of BBC1 drama The Luminaries, but will she be able to prove her innocence and escape the gallows?
Last week, we discovered it was Francis Carver who killed Crosbie – on the orders of the prospector’s estranged wife, Lydia Wells. Yet the lovers are confident they will be able to frame Anna (Eve Hewson).
Taking risks
When it’s revealed that Emery Staines (Himesh Patel, Eastenders) also disappeared at the same time as Crosbie, Lydia accuses Anna of killing him, too, and stages a seance, so it looks like Emery is accusing Anna from beyond the grave!
‘Lydia is a gambler and feels she’s above the law,’ says Eva Green, who plays her. ‘She believes she can have whatever she desires no matter the cost. She’s quite naughty and she’s completely blinded by greed, but her Achilles heel is Francis Carver and her love for him.’
As Hokitika’s great and good gather at The House of Many Wishes, Lydia pretends to summon Emery’s spirit and tries to lay the blame for his death at Anna’s door. Yet events take an unexpected turn, leaving Lydia and Francis questioning whether Emery is really dead!
Realising the danger of giving false testimony, Francis questions whether they should proceed with their plan, but Lydia is determined to ruin Anna, claim Crosbie’s gold and start a new life with Francis… ‘Lydia and Francis are partners in crime,’ explains Eva. ‘Their relationship reminds me of the dynamic between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. It’s Lydia who plants the seeds of revenge and she’s the driving force behind all he does!’
