UNFORGOTTEN

Monday, 9pm ITV Drama

When a dismembered body that’s been stored in a freezer for 30 years is discovered in a London scrap metal yard, another cold case is re-opened in the fourth series of ITV’S compelling crime drama Unforgotten.

Following the trauma at the end of the last series – when DCI Cassie Stuart discovered local doctor Tim Finch had killed a string of young women over many decades – she made the decision to retire from the police force for her own sanity. But, as Unforgotten returns, Cassie’s given some shock news…

‘She learns if she doesn’t complete exactly 30 years of service she won’t get her full pension,’ says The Split’s Nicola Walker, who plays Cassie. ‘To have worked for that long and be just three months shy of getting your payout, feels like a slap in the face. But her dad’s getting rapidly worse with dementia, and she needs money.’

While Cassie considers her dilemma, DI Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan (Sanjeev Bhaskar) leads the investigation into the body in the freezer.

‘Cassie’s not around when the team discover the body this time but she’s soon asking Sunny about specifics of the case,’ says Nicola. ‘Cassie doesn’t switch off because that’s who she is. She might leave the job, but the job’s never going to leave her.’

The victim is soon identified as Matthew Walsh, a young man in his mid-20s who vanished in March 1990, and the freezer was owned by a Robert Fogerty, now deceased.

As Cassie makes the gut-wrenching decision to return to work, she and Sunny make a breakthrough when they discover Robert committed a drink-driving offence on the night Matthew went missing – and there were four others in the car with him…

‘Once again, Unforgotten explores how we cope when secrets are buried by individuals or by institutions,’ says Nicola. ‘This series also examines what we expect of our police. The police are made up of us; they’re not superhuman. So this series questions what the police mean to us and how they reflect us.’
