How to use the FIBIS web­site

Who Do You Think You Are? Magazine - - CONTENTS - Laura Berry shows how you can break down brick walls in your re­search in just half an hour

1 Go to search.fibis.org and click on ‘Ad­vanced’ un­der the ‘Quick Search’ box. Type in Billy’s 3x great grand­fa­ther’s name, John O’Brien, and press ‘Go’. The re­sults page lists the var­i­ous sources that con­tain the name ‘John O’Brien’, with the num­ber of matches found for each source.

2 Click ‘view’ next to ‘The In­dian Mutiny Medal Roll (Bri­tish Forces) 1857-1859’ to see the 17 re­sults for that col­lec­tion in more de­tail. Only one John O’Brien in this list was with the 1st Madras Fusiliers.

3 Click­ing ‘view’ next to his name shows that Pri­vate John O’Brien, reg­i­men­tal num­ber 2252, was awarded the In­dian Mutiny Medal for serv­ing in op­er­a­tions to sup­press the Great Re­bel­lion. The In­dia Of­fice ref­er­ence is given if you wish to find the record at the Bri­tish Li­brary.
