How to use the FIBIS website

- Laura Berry shows how you can break down brick walls in your research in just half an hour

1 Go to search.fibis.org and click on ‘Advanced’ under the ‘Quick Search’ box. Type in Billy’s 3x great grandfather’s name, John O’Brien, and press ‘Go’. The results page lists the various sources that contain the name ‘John O’Brien’, with the number of matches found for each source.

2 Click ‘view’ next to ‘The Indian Mutiny Medal Roll (British Forces) 1857-1859’ to see the 17 results for that collection in more detail. Only one John O’Brien in this list was with the 1st Madras Fusiliers.

3 Clicking ‘view’ next to his name shows that Private John O’Brien, regimental number 2252, was awarded the Indian Mutiny Medal for serving in operations to suppress the Great Rebellion. The India Office reference is given if you wish to find the record at the British Library.
