Who Do You Think You Are?

Ancestors in Cyprus

-

I have read your magazine since the beginning and have been fascinated searching for my ancestors. I found my father’s first cousin in America who did not know that he had an extended family.

I was wondering if you could ask any of your readers who have connections in searching for Cypriot ancestors to let you (or me) know where they are researching their material from. As you can guess, it is very hard to find any past information. The Turkish invasion in the north of Cyprus has made it very difficult for us to access any records, if there are any, as many were destroyed.

There’s a huge Cypriot/ Greek community in the UK and this is one group that is not written about. Is there a chance that you could do a piece on them to see if we can get a connection where Greeks are able to research their family history? Do you have any ideas on how to research Cypriot records? I would be grateful for any information you could provide and hope an article can be written. Christina Savva, by email Editor replies: Although MyHeritage doesn’t have records from Cyprus, it does have almost 30,000 people with a Cyprus connection in its Family Trees database so you may be able to connect with other people researching your family through their website. Do any readers have advice on researching Cypriot family?
