The GRO is not the only place where civil registration is recorded. Local register offices hold the original records from which the GRO gained its copies. Family historians have always had the option to order historic certificates from local offices (the price is £10 as opposed to the £9.25 that you pay for a GRO certificate) but without online indexes it has been difficult to search for possible matches. UKBMD is a central place to search for projects, many run by family history societies in association with the local register office, to index these records and put the indexes freely online. Although we’ve put it under civil registration, this site is also good for tracking down free parish register websites.
