Special enumeration books were completed for institutions such as workhouses, prisons, barracks, asylums and hospitals. In these, people were often listed only by their initials – so WG for William Green. Age, occupation and place of birth are important in identifying the right person, but it is not unusual for the place of birth to be omitted.
