Who Do You Think You Are?

WHAT WE WORE

- Alison Toplis

The long point on the waistline at the front and the bellshaped skirt worn over layers of petticoats were typical women’s dress of this period. Flounced skirts were becoming more popular as the skirt widened into the 1850s. Hair was centrally parted and draped over the ears. Men’s dress followed the line of female fashion with a pointed waistline at the front, along with close-fitting trousers and long curled hair.
