Who Do You Think You Are?

WW1 postcard surprise

-

Julia Baker (letters pages March) was very lucky to have a complete stranger offer her the death penny of her grandmother’s uncle. I was contacted by someone who had bought the death penny of my grandfather’s brother, Albert Charles Worth. He would not sell it to me, but he gave me a photo. However, I was delighted a few months ago to receive an email from a lady who had bought a bundle of silk postcards and photographs at an auction and decided to trace the family they belonged to. Lucky for me that she did because they were from my grandfather Jack Worth, sent from France during the First World War. I have put them in a frame (see above) and they went on display in the village as part of an exhibition to commemorate the First World War centenary. We have pictures of everyone from the village who fought in the First World War hung up in our church and where we know that someone died, we have a service at our war memorial on the anniversary of their death and put a little cross beside the photograph. Joy Armstrong Editor replies: It must have been amazing to have been reunited with such family history treasure. How kind of the person to track you down and offer it to you.
