Sara Khan demonstrates how to find your Scottish kin

Cheryl’s ancestry in North East England meant that some of her relatives came from Scotland. If you have Scottish roots, then www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk is a great source as it holds civil registration certificates, church records, census returns and more.

1

The website was recently relaunched and it is now possible to search for individuals for free although viewing the actual record will incur a cost. For Cheryl, we were able to find the death certificate for her 2x paternal great grandmother, Mary Ellen Tweedy (née Tully). Navigate to the homepage to begin.

2

Enter the name of the ancestor in the appropriate box. In this case we were looking for the death of Mary Ellen Tweedy so enter those details and press ‘Search’ to see what results appear.

3

All relevant hits will appear. In this example, there is only one possible result for Mary Ellen so by logging in you can access the record. The next page will either allow you to view the record (by purchasing credits) or, in this example, ordering the certificate (as the death was too recent).
