While the focus here is on London pauper apprentices, it offers a free portal through which anyone can familiarise themselves with the sources. This page explains the system and the documents left behind. It covers indentures, plus parish sources that may include references to pauper apprentices, such as churchwardens’ records, clothing books and workhouse registers. Below the search box click ‘More search options’. The next page offers a dropdown menu to isolate searches within ‘Document types’, such as apprentice registers from St Botolph Aldgate. Paupers were also bound out by charities and there’s a free dataset of boys sent to merchant ships by the Marine Society.
