Who Do You Think You Are?

WHAT WE WORE

- Alison Toplis

During the 1790s, fashion moved increasingly towards a neo-classical style. The chemise dress was popular for women: a simple, usually white, dress, with a drawstring at the neck and a sash at the waist. Alongside this, older style open gowns over a petticoat visible at the front were also still worn. The silhouette for fashionable men had likewise slimmed down. Buff-coloured breeches were popular along with longer curled and lightly powdered hair.
