They can often help with free access to subscripti­on databases. And of course, they have many physical records that aren’t available online. Welsh Newspapers Online newspapers.library.wales This handy website can be used search through Welsh newspapers from 1804 all the way up to 1919. The majority of the newspapers available date from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Maps maps.nls.uk Old maps and recent maps are both useful. National Library of Scotland has digitised all the 6-inch OS maps and is working on the 25-inch ones. Commercial sites are also available.

Censuses Access to the images is important. Census records are available online through various commercial sites as well as through local libraries and record offices. For the 20th century, try telephone directorie­s in the record office.
