National Service at RAF Coltishall

bit.ly/ 2rIjL2y I’m trying to identify two of the men in these photos who, together with me, Eric Restall (pictured right in the top photo) and Mike Christmas (pictured right in the bottom photo) were based at RAF Coltishall for our National Service from 1952-1954, working out of Neatishead.

The photos were taken on a Norfolk beach. My service number was 2568074. ERPR

Robert William Mason Burton

bit.ly/ 2s0p0NZ My great great grandmother, Sarah Maria Burton, gave birth to an illegitimate son, Robert William Mason Burton, on 6 March 1876 at 3 South Street, Colchester.

Four years later she married my great great grandfather Charles Perry on 15 February 1880 at St Giles Church.

In the 1881 census, Sarah Maria, Charles, and their daughter Elizabeth Mary (aged nine months – my great grandmother) were at 23 Victoria Grove, South Hornsey, while Sarah Maria’s son Robert (aged five) appears with his grandparents Robert and Elizabeth Burton at 3 Albert Cottages, South Street, Colchester.

In the 1891 census Sarah Maria, Charles, and their children are living in Aveley Road, Hackney, while Sarah Maria’s son Robert (listed by the name William Perry, aged 14 – a bookbinder’s apprentice) is with the widow of Sarah Maria’s brother, Jane Burton, at Cyprus Street, Clerkenwell.

Although I have been able to trace Sarah Maria and Charles’s children, I have hit a brick wall with Robert. Woolhe

Davy and Kearns families of Dublin

bit.ly/ 2rI9H9F Greetings from New Zealand! My wife, born Annie Mary Davy, has lost all contact with her Irish roots. Although she was born in County Louth in 1937, all of her siblings, parents and grandparents hailed from South Dublin.

Annie’s father was named Augustine John Davy and her mother was Hannah Mary (or Margaret) Kearns, both born in 1897. Annie’s parents and family relocated to the UK in 1937 and are now spread around the world. In theory, Annie should have lots of ‘cousins’ in the Dublin area.

We have researched the family back to the mid-1800s so far, but would welcome any

Militia substitution

bit.ly/ 2rIjsoq Can anyone tell me how substitution worked in the militia at the turn of the 18th century?

One of my ancestors became the substitute for someone in another (not neighbouring) Buckinghamshire village and I’m wondering if it was arranged by a third party? Ashbee
