This month readers can explore fascinating resources from Jane Austen’s home county thanks to Hampshire Genealogical Society ( HGS), Anguline Research Archives and Hampshire Record Office.

Portsmouth MIs, 1837-1978

The largest item is a collection of Portsmouth monumental inscriptions created by Hampshire Genealogical Society, worth £6.

Normally available to purchase on CD via hgsfamilyhistory.com, the 635-page document contains details of burials at the city’s Highland Road cemetery between 1837 and 1978.

The file includes a cemetery plan and master index, both of which can be used to locate the exact burial plots of particular ancestors.

Steventon MIs, 1768-1987

Also from HGS we have acquired a collection of monumental inscriptions from the small parish of Steventon, where Jane Austen was born in 1775.

Worth £3 but not currently on sale to the public, these exclusive records have been carefully transcribed from headstones and memorials located at St Nicholas Church, where Austen’s father served as the rector between 1765 and 1801.

Chawton MIs, 1679-1980

HGS has also supplied a collection of monumental inscriptions from the parish of Chawton, near Alton, where Jane Austen lived for the final eight years of her life and penned some of her most famous novels, including Mansfield Park and Persuasion.

As with the Steventon material, the records are not currently on sale.

Chawton village booklet

The final HGS resource this month is a helpful PDF booklet about undertaking family history research in Chawton, featuring details of notable landowners, innkeepers and tradespeople.

Similar guides for other Hampshire villages can be ordered online via hgs-familyhistory. com/shop/village-booklets, costing £2 each.

Memorials of Christchurch-Twynham

Normally priced £8 on CD or £4 as a download, this antiquarian book supplied by Anguline Research Archives ( anguline.co.uk) records the history of Christchurch Priory – renowned for being the longest parish church in England.

Although now located in Dorset, the Priory and the town of Christchurch itself remained part of Hampshire until 1974.

Hampshire Archives and Local Studies image set

Finally, readers can access a selection of documents from the collections of Hampshire Archives and Local Studies, including Jane Austen’s baptism record and a Victorian photograph showing Winchester High Street.
