Edward the Confessor, son of Æthelred the Unready and one of the last Anglo-Saxon kings, is crowned at the cathedral of Winchester on 3 April.
1495
The oldest dry dock in the world is built under the orders of Henry VII in Portsmouth. Construction of the Mary Rose begins here in 1510.
1620
The Mayflower, stuffed with pilgrims, begins its journey from Southampton for the New World, making an extended stop at Plymouth on the way for repairs and supplies.
1775
Jane Austen is born on 16 December at Steventon Rectory near Basingstoke in Hampshire.
1796
Jane Austen begins work on First Impressions, which eventually becomes known as Pride & Prejudice. Her first published novel, Sense & Sensibility, will finally appear in 1811.
1812
Navy pay office clerk John Dickens and his wife Elizabeth (née Barrow) celebrate the birth of their second child, Charles, at 13 Mile End Terrace in Portsmouth.

On Wednesday 10 April, a London and South Western Railway’s boat train from Waterloo reaches Southampton. In all 923 passengers board

An 83rd-minute goal from Bobby Stokes sees Southampton FC, who had finished sixth in the Second Division, win the FA Cup Final against First Division Manchester United.
