Here are some suggested first ports of call in using the internet for tracing an army ancestor from the age of muskets and bayonets

Military records include the Waterloo Medal Roll; Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls from 1793; Militia records from Dorset, West Yorkshire, Perthshire, Warwickshire and Cornwall; Military Deserters (1812–1927); Army Pensioner papers from Chelsea and Kilmainham Hospitals (1724–1925); Muster Books and Pay Lists 1812–17 (though some are much earlier).

British Army Service Records that can be viewed online include Pension Records from Kilmainham Hospital from 1783 onwards; Army Lists for 1787 and 1798 and details of Royal Artillery Officers (1716–1899); information on Half Pay Officers (1714) and Peninsular War Officers; some Militia records for Plymouth, York and Northamptonshire; some details of Prisoners of War; and Transcriptions of various Napoleonic Records.
