Who Do You Think You Are?

A great website for the Great War

-

In addition to the key military resources mentioned in your feature ‘Track down your army ancestors’ in the November issue, I would like to recommend a website.

The December 2017 issue of BodKin, the journal of the Bradford Family History Society, includes the article ‘Websites you may have forgotten about…’ which lists, among others, flickr.com/photos/bradfordww1/ sets which contains pages from the Bradford Roll of Honour compiled during the First World War and deposited at the Bradford Central Library in 1919. It includes the name, address, regiment, date of enlistment, date of discharge, and date of death if died in service of “all the Bradford men who served their country in the Navy or Army during the Great European War of 1914–1918”.

Personally, I found this site very useful, because although I knew where my great uncle Arthur was buried from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website ( www.cwgc.org) and had a copy of his medal record, the Roll of Honour gave me the date he enlisted. Like so many records of servicemen from that war, my great uncle’s were destroyed by bombing during the Second World War.

In previous issues you have recommended joining family history societies. It’s excellent advice, and I would like to say thank you to Bradford Family History Society ( bradfordfhs.org.uk). Joanna Booth

Editor replies: Thank you for the recommendation Joanna – free sites like this one can enrich our research without costing a penny ( see our feature on page 15). And I’m glad that you are enjoying your membership of Bradford Family History Society.
