The African Stories in Hull and East Yorkshire project is appealing for members of the public to get in contact with information about children of African descent who lived in the region’s children’s homes.

The project’s organisers made the announcement after finding personal testimonies and film archive footage indicating that children of African descent lived in the Newland Cottage Homes and the Hessle Cottage Homes in Hull between the 1940s and the 1960s. The organisers are also interested in a number of other institutions including the Pickering Home for Girls, the Children’s Home for the Hull Poor Law Union and Hull Police Temperance Society’s Temporary Home.

African Stories is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund and organised by the William Wilberforce Monument Fund. It explores the stories of people of African descent in Hull and East Yorkshire from the 1750s to 2007.
