Jewell’s Ipswich Directory, 1898
This month’s first download comes courtesy of My History ( my-history.co.uk).
Normally priced £10 on CD, the late Victorian resource not only covers the county town of Ipswich, but Felixstowe, Hadleigh, Stowmarket, Walton, Woodbridge and “villages adjoining within a radius of eight miles”.
Like similar publications of the period, it features a comprehensive street directory, a list of inhabitants and a map.
Kelly’s Directory of Lowestoft, Beccles & Neighbourhood, 1934
This interwar directory is also available to purchase as a £10 CD from My History.
Spanning 470 pages, the resource contains a wealth of information about towns and villages in the north-east of Suffolk, including details of private residents, tradespeople and local institutions.
Chillesford Parish Registers
Originally published in 1886, this digitised book features transcriptions of historic parish records from Chillesford, near Aldeburgh. Priced £8 on CD or £4 as a download from Anguline Research Archives ( anguline.co.uk), the file provides full coverage of baptisms from 1740 to 1812, marriages from 1742 to 1743 and burials from 1740 to 1812, with additional records for selected other years.
Bungay Holy Trinity Parish Register Transcriptions
Suffolk Family History Society (SFHS) has supplied four products for this month’s bonus content.
Priced £5.11 on CD from suffolkfhs.org.uk, this first SFHS resource provides details of baptisms, marriages and burials from Bungay’s Holy Trinity Church dating back to 1813.
Split into three PDFs, the records were transcribed from the original registers by society member Ann Youngs. As a result, users can quickly search the entries by details including name, year and occupation.
West Stow & Wordwell Parish Registers
The second SFHS product, normally priced £1.20 on CD, is a scanned copy of a 1903 book containing parish register transcriptions from West Stow (1558–1850) and Wordwell (1580–1850), near Bury St Edmunds. Although the PDF itself is not searchable, the book is easy to navigate and boasts monumental inscriptions, wills, lay subsidy lists and historical information about the area.
Creeting St Peter Monumental Inscriptions
Compiled by June Parsons, Margaret Smith and Isabel Williams, this SFHS resource – formerly sold on fiche for £2.50 – brings together monumental inscriptions (MIs) from Creeting St Peter near Stowmarket.
Although most MI collections will provide typed inscriptions and a name index, this file goes one step further and includes a hand-drawn illustration of each headstone and tablet.
SuffolkRoots covers and contents pages
SFHS has also provided the front covers and contents pages from the four most recent issues of its quarterly journal, Suffolk Roots. While these sample pages do not contain any articles, they demonstrate the impressive breadth of its research interests.
Suffolk Record Office image set
Finally, we have a gallery featuring 15 interesting documents and photos from the three branches that make up Suffolk Record Office: Bury St Edmunds, Ipswich and Lowestoft. Highlights include a print of Lowestoft Harbour (1852) and a photo of munitions workers in Bury St Edmunds (1916).
