Kelly’s Directory of Cumberland and Westmorland, 1934
Supplied by My History ( myhistory.co.uk), this month’s first resource is a 1930s trade directory covering Cumberland and Westmorland – the two former counties that make up much of modern-day Cumbria.
Sold as a pair of CDs costing £10 each, or as £9 downloads from twrcomputing.co.uk, both sections of the publication include the names of local tradespeople and private residents. The original county maps are missing, but the advertisements are included – a rich resource for researchers.
The Parish Registers of Watermillock and Matterdale
Sold on CD (£8) and download (£4) by Anguline Research Archives ( anguline.co.uk), this next product combines two parish register volumes covering the neighbouring settlements of Watermillock and Matterdale.
The larger, Watermillock section of the file contains transcriptions of local baptism, marriage and burial records from 1579 to 1812, while the section for Matterdale features entries from 1634 to 1720. Both parts have indexes of names, places and trades.
A Transcript of the Registers of St Mary the Virgin’s Church, Kirkby Lonsdale, 1777–1812
Readers can also explore three resources kindly supplied by Cumbria Family History Society.
This first item is a digital collection of parish register transcriptions from St Mary the Virgin’s Church in Kirkby Lonsdale, located near Kendal.
Normally available to buy as a £10 CD from cumbriafhs.com, the document contains details of baptisms, marriages and burials spanning 1777–1812, alongside a brief history of the church itself.
The Memorial Inscriptions of the Old Church and St Martin’s Church, Brampton
The second Cumbria Family History Society resource brings together details of memorial inscriptions from the small market town of Brampton, near Carlisle.
Normally sold as a £10 CD or £8 download from cumbriafhs. com, this 269-page publication boasts a churchyard plan and name index, plus an appendix featuring photos of carvings and armorial bearings found on the graves.
The memorial inscriptions themselves also feature supporting information about the deceased gleaned from sources such as local newspapers, which is testament to the work of compilers Bridget Casson and William Bundred.
Cumbria FHS newsletter, May 2018
Rounding off the trio of Cumbria Family History Society files is a copy of its quarterly newsletter.
The sample edition supplied here spans 70 pages and includes a report of the society’s recent conference in Seascale, as well as an article by Keith Simpson about several Irish Catholic families who settled in Cumberland.
