Pigot’s Directory of Northumberland, 1834
This month’s first download is a county-wide directory of Northumberland courtesy of My History ( my-history.co.uk).
Normally sold as part of a set of northern English directories priced £15.95 on CD or £11.95 as a download, the publication provides details of “merchants, bankers, professional gentlemen, manufacturers and traders” resident in Northumberland in 1834.
As with other My History products, the directory is fully searchable and bookmarked by major headings.
Ward’s Directory of Newcastle & Wallsend, 1912
Also supplied by My History is Ward’s Directory of Newcastle & Wallsend, 1912, normally priced £11.95 on CD or £8.95 as a download.
Published shortly before the First World War, this large publication is packed with information about private residents and businesses across Newcastle upon Tyne and the surrounding areas.
Although Newcastle ceased to be part of Northumberland in 1400, the burgeoning town (and eventual city) remained an important regional centre of industry and commerce.
As a result, the directory is likely to contain a large number of individuals who originally hailed from rural Northumberland but moved to Newcastle in search of work.
Tynemouth 1891 Census Index
Northumberland and Durham Family History Society (NDFHS) has generously supplied a trio of resources this month.
First on the list is this fully searchable index to the 1891 Tynemouth census, worth £5.75 and normally only available by contacting sales@ndfhs.org.uk.
While the full 1891 census for England and Wales is available on major subscription sites, this handy product brings all the entries from the Tynemouth registration district together in one single PDF document spanning 1,902 pages.
North Shields Presbyterian Baptisms, 1800–1812
Also from NDFHS is this small collection of Presbyterian baptism entries dating from the turn of the 19th century.
Normally sold as a printed booklet worth £3.50, the transcriptions not only show the date of each baptism, but the child’s date of birth and the occupation of their father.
Bankside Dissenters’ Chapel Baptisms, 1789–1820
The third and final NDFHS resource features more nonconformist baptism records from the North Shields area – this time from the Bankside Dissenters’ Chapel.
As with the previous product, the file is normally sold as a booklet costing £3.50.
FBDMA newsletter, June 2018
From the north of the county, we have a copy of the latest Friends of Berwick and District Museum and Archives (FBDMA) newsletter.
Distributed four times a year, the publication provides its members with the latest news and updates about the organisation, which supports Berwick Museum and Art Gallery and Berwick-upon-Tweed Record Office.
Copies of past newsletters more than a year old are available to view for free at berwickfriends.org.uk.
Berwick-upon-Tweed Record Office image set
To complement the FBDMA newsletter (see above), Berwickupon-Tweed Record Office has kindly provided us with a gallery of highlights from its collections.
This includes an antique postcard depicting the famous Holy Island of Lindisfarne, plus a Berwick Police pay sheet from the late 19th century.
Northumberland Archives image set
Finally, we have a series of documents and images compiled by Northumberland Archives.
Included within the 11-strong set is a list of Alnwick’s poor from 1823 and a photograph of fisher girls at work in Blyth, dated c1900.
